Another gold award for Joseph Ash Galvanizing

RoSPA Health and Safety Awards

Joseph Ash Galvanizing picks up a prestigious RoSPA Award.

Joseph Ash Galvanizing is proud to announce that we are a GOLD winner for the RoSPA Health and Safety Awards 2017. We have achieved the Gold award in the prestigious annual scheme run by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).

The award will be presented during a ceremony at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel on Thursday, July 13, 2017. The award has been achieved during a special year for family-safety charity RoSPA, as it celebrates its centenary.

Through the RoSPA Awards scheme, which is open to businesses and organisations of all types and sizes from across the UK and overseas, judges consider entrants’ overarching occupational health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement. The awards are now in its 61st year.

Julia Small, RoSPA’s head of awards and events, said: “The RoSPA Awards are the most prestigious in the world of occupational health and safety, and held in high regard around the world, as winning one demonstrates an organisation’s commitment to maintaining an excellent health and safety record. Achieving the standard required is no mean feat.

“This is a special year in the history of RoSPA, and we congratulate all of our winners in this, our centenary year”.

The majority of awards are non-competitive and mark achievement at merit, bronze, silver and gold levels. Gold medals, president’s awards and orders of distinction are presented to organisations sustaining the high standards of the gold level over consecutive years. For the first time in 2017, the Patron’s Award has been presented to those organisations that have achieved consecutive gold awards for 25 years or more.

Competitive awards go to the best entries in 24 industry sectors including construction, healthcare, transport and logistics, engineering, manufacturing and education.

There are specialist awards for occupational health, environmental management and fleet safety, and excellence trophies for the best international, new entry, workforce involvement and organisation operating or based in Scotland. RoSPA’s top accolade is the Sir George Earle Trophy.

The headline sponsor of the RoSPA Awards 2017 is NEBOSH – the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health – for the 12th consecutive year.

Whilst customer service and quality of finish are at the heart of everything Joseph Ash Galvanizing does for our clients, the health and safety of employees at our plants is also our prime concern.

In recognition of our hard work when it comes to exceeding health and safety standards, Joseph Ash Galvanizing has again been awarded the Gold award from RoSPA.

This is the third year in a row that we have won the Gold award and we couldn’t be happier.

RoSPA is The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. In order to be considered for the award a panel of judges from RoSPA visited our plants and assessed our health and safety management policies, procedures, systems and our industry leading safety record.

It’s an exciting year to win the Gold award as RoSPA is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the health and safety awards. RoSPA itself states on its website:

“These internationally recognised awards have become the most sought after accolade by organisations from every sector, offering organisations the opportunity to prove their ongoing commitment to raising standards and to celebrate success.”

Here’s hoping for success again in 2017!

OHSAS 18001 accreditation badge

Joseph Ash Walsall also receives health and safety certification.

In April 2015 Joseph Ash Bilston was awarded OHSAS 18001, the health and safety accreditation from the British Assessment Bureau. This was in recognition of hard work to continually improve health and safety at the Bilston plant.

In May 2015, Joseph Ash Chesterfield followed suit, and was also awarded OHSAS 18001.

Health and safety has always been of the upmost importance to Joseph Ash Galvanizing, and the aim is for all plants to receive OHSAS 18001.

OHSAS 18001 is important for the following reasons:

  • It reduces workplace hazards and boosts employee morale
  • It provides a safe environment in which to conduct operations and business
  • It is a framework for an occupational health and safety management system
  • It minimises the risk of production delays.

We’re pleased to say that the latest plant to receive this excellent accreditation is Joseph Ash Walsall.

Well done to the team at Walsall for this achievement!

Lee Groves and ladder

Joseph Ash Galvanizing employees asked to design an innovative safety solution to enhance health and safety at our plants.

The health and safety of employees is of paramount importance to Joseph Ash Galvanizing, and concerns had been growing about the safety of team members in our plants working under large jigs suspended in the air by cranes. As a company we wanted to find a solution which would prevent workers being badly injured should a crane fail.

To this end, Steven Hopkins, the Managing Director at Joseph Ash Galvanizing set all employees a challenge to design a simple, portable safety solution, not involving heavy chunks of fabricated steelwork. To encourage innovative ideas, Steven also provided an incentive whereby the winning designer would be given £500 to donate to a charity of his/her choice.

After a very short time we are pleased to report that Lee Groves, from Joseph Ash Bilston, designed and fabricated some portable supports which will protect the safety of our employees when working under a jig.

The solution was important to Lee and throughout the process he asked for feedback from other colleagues in order to produce a solution that would be adopted in practise.

Lee has chosen SARA – the Severn Area Rescue Association – as the charity to receive £500 and Joseph Ash Galvanizing has donated the money in Lee’s name.

Not only has Lee helped to ensure the safety of his colleagues, but his donation is also helping to keep people safe on the rivers and land in the Severn Estuary area.

Well done Lee!

OHSAS 18001 accreditation

At the end of April 2015, Joseph Ash Galvanizing was proud to announce that our plant at Bilston was awarded OHSAS 18001 status. This was a great achievement for the team at Bilston as this was the only hot dip galvanizing plant in the UK to be awarded the certification.

Joseph Ash Galvanizing promised at that time that our other plants would follow suit by also working towards OHSAS 18001. We are now pleased to report that the Chesterfield plant has become the second plant in the UK to be certified.

OHSAS 18001 is important for the following reasons:

  • It is a framework for an occupational health and safety management system
  • It reduces workplace hazards and boosts employee morale
  • It minimises the risk of production delays
  • It provides a safe environment in which to conduct business and operations.

Well done to the team at Chesterfield for working towards the certification!

Bilston plant is currently the only galvanizer in the UK to receive OHSAS 18001.

Joseph Ash Galvanizing has always been proud of its health and safety standards and certifications, and continually strives to protect all employees and visitors who enter their galvanizing plants. The Joseph Ash Bilston site has recently moved a step further than any other galvanizing plant in the UK however by being awarded the OHSAS 18001 Certification.

The Certification to OHSAS 18001 commits Joseph Ash Galvanizing to having a clearly defined management system in place to identify and control health and safety risks. It means that Joseph Ash Bilston can:

  • Create processes for continually reviewing and improving occupational health and safety
  • Minimise the risk of production delays
  • Provide a safe environment in which to do business
  • Ensure legal requirements for the industry are adhered to
  • Minimise risks of downtime through accidents.

Achieving the certification involved the redevelopment of the existing Bilston health and safety policy to articulate commitments to the continual improvement of health and safety performance. Three members of the Bilston team also completed the required OHSAS 18001 Internal Auditor Training.

Steven Hopkins, Managing Director at Joseph Ash Galvanizing said:

“The team at Joseph Ash Bilston are proud that they’re currently the only galvanizing plant in the UK to receive OHSAS 18001 certification. This is a great achievement for Joseph Ash Galvanizing. Watch this space to see the other Joseph Ash plants follow suit!”

Customers with enquiries about the OHSAS 18001 Certification are invited to contact Joseph Ash Galvanizing on 0121 504 2560 or via sales@josephash.co.uk.
