New trucks with improved safety features delivered to Joseph Ash Walsall

As health and safety is very important to Joseph Ash Galvanizing, we’re pleased to announce the recent delivery of two new trucks at Joseph Ash Walsall. The trucks – provided by Scania – have new integrated CCTV cameras and audio. This helps with improved load security, cyclist safety and real time monitoring. Our drivers have been enjoying the new driving experience!

Safe deliveries poster.

As health and safety are of paramount importance at Joseph Ash Galvanizing and Premier Galvanizing, we want our plants to be safe for all drivers who drop off and collect loads. With this in mind, we recently produced ‘Safe deliveries’ posters for our customers.

The poster reminds all drivers who enter/leave our plants to ensure their goods and materials are loaded safely and correctly on their trucks. It has lots of useful tips and advice on how to load and unload correctly.

The posters are being printed and we aim to post hard copies to customers before Christmas. If you’d like to download an electronic copy so that you can read the safety advice today click here, or call your usual contact number to request a poster.

To the external eye these photos may simply look like a vast expanse of concrete… To us however, they’re a thing of beauty as they represent a safer, more comfortable loading and unloading environment for our team members and customers. Welcome to the new yard at Joseph Ash Walsall!

2018 was an extremely busy year for Joseph Ash Walsall, and the yard was beginning to look tired, in poor condition, with pot holes appearing at regular intervals. With concerns that the holes were going to be a safety hazard we decided to use the excellent services of TG Beighton to re-concrete the 1,000 Squares metres of yard.

TG Beighton are external contractors, based in Chesterfield, who previously worked on our plant extension, and we knew they’d have the skills, experience and safety standards to provide a quality service, whilst being able to stick to a very tight deadline of just three weeks.

Three weeks in and the project was a success, and we now have more space in the yard, as well as a safer environment.

Investment in our Joseph Ash plants is crucial to maintaining our position as a leader in the UK galvanizing industry, so the replacement of the concrete was a good chance to improve other aspects of the Walsall plant at the same time:

  • We also installed improved lighting around the yard, as well as new crash barriers and fencing throughout the perimeter for added security and protection.
  • We added a new drainage system to prevent standing water, and improved drainage in and around the area, with a chamber being installed around the yard for underground electrical cables.

Finally, with the addition of a new galvanizing bath in late 2018 too, we have a plant we can feel very proud of.

With the first quarter of 2019 well underway, the investment we’ve made has allowed us to work even safer than before, allowing safe access and egress from the area at all times. Our employees and customers also benefit from the extra safety and security when either working on or visiting the plant. We also believe we have increased the capacity of this site which is also beneficial for storing fabrications and completing even more work in 2019.

We’re pleased to announce that Joseph Ash Galvanizing has recently been granted ‘Fit For Nuclear’ status (F4N), and we’re the first galvanizer in the UK to be accredited.

F4N is a unique service to help UK manufacturing companies get ready to bid for work in the nuclear supply chain and to measure their operations against the standards required to supply the nuclear industry – in new build, operations and decommissioning.

Developed by the Nuclear AMRC with the support of its top tier partners, F4N includes nuclear new build developers and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. These industry leaders are using F4N to identify potential companies for their own supply chains.

Being granted F4N status is a stringent process and we’re pleased to be awarded the status. As a commitment to our continued participation and as a supplier to the nuclear industry we will continue to be monitored by an F4N Industrial Advisor (IA), and we’ll be required to continue to upload periodic updates to our action plan / continuous sustainable improvement plan ensuring that we address any areas identified on the nuclear checklist.

Please click here to see our F4N listing.

Many thanks to everyone at Joseph Ash Galvanizing who has worked hard to achieve this status. Thank you also to F4N for granting us the certificate. We look forward to our growing relationship with the nuclear industry.

Joseph Ash in 1900.

Joseph Ash Galvanizing was set up by Joseph Ash – the son of a Birmingham Chemist – in 1857 and this photo is from one of our original plants in Birmingham in the early 1900s.

For over 160 years Joseph Ash Galvanizing has been in business. From bridges in the north to skyscrapers in the south… From roads in the east to railways in the west, we’ve seen it all and hot dip galvanized it all. We’re proud to galvanize the UK.

If you have any metal finishing needs – hot dip galvanizingpowder coating and shot blasting – contact us today. We’d love to help.

End of year message and Season’s Greetings from Steven Hopkins, MD at Joseph Ash Galvanizing.

Dear Customers,

As we come to the end of 2018, I think we can agree it has been an unforgettable year, given the tsunami of politics that has broken over us and the sheer amount of energy expended by all parts of society in trying to solve the unsolvable with Europe. It seems to me that there is a hugely wide spectrum of opinions, all passionately held by significant numbers of people and my guess is that, whatever the outcome, we will still be hearing arguments for decades to come.

Remarkably, the economy appears little affected. There has undoubtedly been a slow-down in major construction projects, perhaps deferments due to uncertainty by investors, in part offset by badly needed housebuilding. However, the galvanizing industry’s volumes are only slightly down compared to 2017 levels and I doubt that galvanizing has lost any market share to paint, which probably reflects the activity in our customers’ workshops too.

Similarly, our customers in the main seem positive about the next few months at least, despite the deadlines fast approaching for Brexit decisions and enactment, and concerns over possible border delays. For our own part, we have sought and obtained assurances from our suppliers that our inputs will not be affected by any outcome.

In other news, we’ve also had an unforgettable year in terms of the work we have taken on and the construction projects we’ve been involved in, and we’d like to thank you for sending them our way. Everything from steel barriers for the new Mersey Gateway Bridge to galvanized pressure vessels for the UK’s two new aircraft carriers, Andy Scott’s new ‘Canter’ sculpture to Luke Perry’s Queen Aethelflaed statue, and countless steel products used across the UK’s roads and transport network. We’ve even been involved in a recent project with REIDSteel to help rebuild a school destroyed by 2017 hurricanes on the British Virgin Islands.

We’ve also celebrated some internal achievements, namely long-time service anniversaries for many of our employees, renewed memberships and accreditations with significant industry bodies, attendance at a number of trade shows and exhibitions, and the joy of networking with some of you at various events held by organisations such as the British Constructional Steelwork, the Rural and Industrial Design and Building Association and the Galvanizers Association.

As we sprint towards 2019, we look forward to a bright year ahead and to continuing our partnership with you, hopefully hitch-free and at good levels, throughout the year and beyond. Before we get there though, I wish you, your families and your colleagues the happiest of Christmases and a very healthy and prosperous New Year.

Regards,

Steven Hopkins

We’re pleased to announce the renewal of our membership to RIDBA – the Rural and Industrial Design and Building Association.

As a metal finishing company that regularly hot dip galvanizes and protects steel for agricultural purposes, we are proud to support this leading trade association for the modern agricultural and industrial buildings industry in the UK.

Mick Jackson, IT and Marketing Manager at Joseph Ash says: “We have been members of RIDBA for a number of years, supporting their events and publications. As a company who regularly works with agricultural steel manufacturers, to protect and perfect steel fabrications, we feel it is important for the industry to have a voice. RIDBA manages to represent this voice to the government, leading client organisations and other stakeholders.”

RIDBA also acts a great endorsement for companies such as ours, as membership is a recognised mark of quality and demonstrates our high standard of competence in our particular field. We also have to sign-up to – and adhere to – a stringent code of conduct for doing business.

We’re looking forward to another good year as part of the RIDBA member team. We’re also excited about the upcoming RIDBA Building Awards (they only happen every two years) which will be held in Nottingham in March 2019.
