While we usually work with steel at Joseph Ash Galvanizing, our powder coating service extends to aluminium as well, proving popular for architectural fabrications such as window frames, balconies, and railings.
We explore what powder coating is, its benefits for aluminium fabrications, and why it is preferential to traditional liquid paints.
Unlike paint, which is applied in liquid form onto the aluminium surface, powder coating is applied in powder form via a spray gun. The particles are electrostatically charged, and heated in an oven after application. The process means powder coating lasts much longer than paint does, so your aluminium fabrication is protected for longer and maintains its finish.
The process for powder coating aluminium is the same as the powder coating process for steel.
Surface preparation before powder coating is important to make sure the aluminium is clean so that the powder coating can adhere to the metal surface. After the aluminium has been thoroughly cleaned, it will then be ready to be powder coated by a skilled operative.
The powder particles are charged with positive electrostatic charge, which makes them stick to the aluminium. The process only uses as much powder as is necessary to coat the surface, minimising material waste and making it a much more sustainable option.
The fabrication is then baked in a curing oven to form a tough, corrosion-resistant coating that can last for many more years than liquid paint.
Like liquid paint, powder coating paints come in a wide range of colours, textures and finishes. There are numerous benefits to powder coating aluminium compared to liquid paint:
